I want a puppy. I'm driven to think about this because I'm home alone right now. I was supposed to go to work today, but it is snowing and work is far away on scary roads, especially since I'm in A's truck today which has no back weight. It's cold at home during the day, since usually the house is empty. Anyway, back to the puppy. I was looking up breeds on Wikipedia, and this picture made me laugh out loud. Right now, we could afford a puppy, and Christmas break is coming up, so we'd have time to train it too. Our house already even has a doggy door. Here's the holdup: A needs to go back to school, and if he does, we'll have to move in with parents. Probably his parents, since mine already have a full house. His parents already have a dog, and his mom would not love to be responsible for another one. Plus we would live in the basement where their dog is not allowed to go, and there is new carpet. If we did live with my parents, there is no way they would let us have a dog. No way. So for now, the answer is no. That is sad. I hope you all feel bad for me. Here are my top choices of puppies:

Anyway I'm glad to hear A is getting ready to go back to school. I think you might be surprised how cheap married student housing can be at the U for example ... look into it. I love parents and have been grateful to be able to move in a couple of times (ok, 3 times if you count both sets of parents) but there is definite value in being independent, both for your marriage and for your relationships with the parents involved.
Married student housing is actually only $50 (more or less) cheaper than the deal we have now. I bet we could scrimp and make it with both of us in school, especially since mine is free, and stay where we are. We're just looking at all our options, and I think A just wants to say no to a puppy.
A should be able to get paid for a grad program in engineering rather than paying for it himself. When we were at the U of U I think the TA stipend was somewhere around $12k/year but I'm sure it's more now. At UC Merced it is around $20k/year. It's very workable that way, especially if you continue to make an income, even a small one. It's good to be married to a technical type!
I know it is not the same, but you could come over and play with my doggie anytime you want. She could even come over to visit if you want to practice having hair all over the place. wink-wink. Those pictures are cute! However, the link to "doxi" is no good anymore. What cross is a Doxi? or is it just sort for Dauchsund?
I have heard of people doing pet sitting to earn extra money. You could try that to try out having some different types of dogs that you don't have to keep. Just a thought.
Ali: I've thought about pet sitting, don't know that I'm super interested. It could potential increase the wanting, but the answer would still be no. Doxi is just a nickname, and sorry about the link. It wasn't that unusual, just a brown puppy! I'm looking for a non-corgie, I think they must shed excessively.

p.s. boxers are the best dogs if you are going to have kids. little dogs, not so good around kids. i know from experience. Boxers are amazing dogs and i'm not just saying that because i have one, and she would never lick your feet, jump up on you, or bark at you, they have the best most expressive personalities too and mimic the moods of their owners.
