pavlova birthday

Well, birthday week is half over already. I have to say, I much prefer it when the big day falls on a weekend, but it's good regardless.

Sunday we celebrated my birthday and my mom's birthday with my  family. My sister and her husband brought arroz con pollo, coconut cupcakes, and pavlova. Did you know pavlova is amazing? I may or may not have eaten three...and a cupcake. Soooooo delicious. And it was fun to talk with family and be entertained by the nieces and nephews.

Monday I helped my mom clean up her toy room. We went through a box of my old dollies, so funny to see what I kept!

Tuesday, A and my mom put together a delicious breakfast: cinnamon rolls, strawberries, cocoa, oatmeal, and oj. A also packed me a special birthday lunch with pizza left over from Saturday.

For dinner we had hawaiian takeout from Moki's that A picked up on his way home from class, it was so good! We'll definitely have to go there again. We saw my brother briefly, recently returned from Australia, and then I watched Hugo while A fell asleep. I think it was pay back for all the times I fell asleep while watching tv when we were dating. I really enjoyed the movie, regardless.

Since my mom actually has a birthday today, were having family dinner, and Friday I'm going to breakfast and shopping with my bff Trisha. Let the birthday week continue!

skittles

Don't mind my awkward pose in this picture... I just wanted to share my crazy outfit with you. A says it looks like Skittles.

Inspired by Valerie and Emma, I took the plunge into colored pantalones. I chose these persimmon-colored skinnies from h&m (my first h&m purchase ever). The hot pink shoes are new too, on sale for $10 at Target. The purple v-neck was on sale for $4. I love sales. This is also my first attempt at color blocking, if it can even be called that. It might be a bit of a crazy outfit, but I kind of love it. The yellow sweater was A's suggestion, good idea honey!

Anyway, it's been a great week. Over the holiday weekend I did some super cleaning. I really love having a clean house! I also went to an estate sale where I scored some adorable vintage greeting cards and an antique pin with carved ivory roses.

Wednesday I went to the mall by myself, which I actually kind of love (being able to shop at your own pace is nice). That's were I picked up the orange pants.

Thursday I had a night out on the town with my sweet Grandma, mom, and sister M (we missed our Montana sister!). Grandma was a Home Economics teacher for many years, and she always cooks up the most delicious meals. Thursday we had salmon with peas and carrots, scalloped potatoes, salad, and banana chiffon pie. So good! Then we went to Pioneer Theater and saw a stage production of Emma. I love that story, and we had such a lovely time.

Yesterday A and I went on a date to the temple and Chik-Fil-A (my most favorite fast food) and then to Target. He tolerated my shoe and clothing shopping, and even allowed me to sneak some cadbury mini eggs into our basket. It's my birthday next week, I was a cleaning machine last week, and I majorly helped him edit a paper for school so he's been extra sweet to me lately as a result. Love that guy.

Today we went to the baptism of a woman in our neighborhood. It was very special, there was such a strong spirit there. Then I went to a bridal shower with my mom, which is always fun, and tonight we are having a big pizza and Wii party with A's family. I don't love Wii, but I do love pizza, and we're going to have ice cream/cookie sandwiches in honor of my birthday. Fun, no?

season of love.

So  every once in awhile, A gets it inn his head to implement a strict monthly budget.Well, of all the months to choose this time around, he chose the one where I had planned an extravagant party, the one with Valentine's Day, and the one with my birthday.

Usually for Valentine's we go somewhere extra fancy, somewhere with a special menu for the day, and with a hefty (but worth every penny) pricetag, like Spark or Lugano.

Well, the budget preempted that this year, and A even wanted to just stay home. I convinced him to go to Bombay House, because the price would be half of our usual tradition, and when I called they said that there was only a fifteen minute wait all night last year.

Well, we got there pretty late, since A had class, and the waiting area was packed.we got it bane in the list and the host said it would be a 35 minute wait.

An hour later, we finally were seated! I swear they do that intentionally, it is so annoying.
Regardless, the food was excellent, and the company couldn't have been better. Can you believe this is our fifth Valentine's? I hardly can.

Love you, Mr. Nielsen. Happy Valentine's Day!

monochrome.

Lately I like wearing two things that are almost the same color, but not quite. Example here: yellow cardigan, green silk shirt. I also have an orange cardigan that I love wearing with red. I like the tension between matching and clashing.

If you follow me on Pinterest, you may have noticed I have a Valentine Party pin board. Well, I actually did have a Valentine Party, and I think it turned out pretty adorable. I thought I took some really great pictures, but Now I'm realizing I didn't get great pictures of the food, close up! Oh well, you live and you learn, and you get a good idea of the overall party here.

Attendance was a bit low, but we had a lovely time, and made some good progress.

I'll be posting a tutorial on the hand warmers soon, they were so cute!

I made these cookies, glazed pink. I subbed zest of one lemon and juice of half a lemon for the lemon emulsion, added another t of poppyseeds, and only baked for 5 minutes. I also had to improvise the glaze, using juice of half a lemon instead of the emulsion again, and adding a lot more sugar till it was thick enough to hold shape.

I made these red velvet cupcakes, iced with my sister's cream cheese frosting recipe (2 packages cream cheese, 2 sticks butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, vanilla and salt to taste). With a red heart sprinkle a la Trophy Cupcake.

I also dipped strawberries. No recipe needed there, huh? My only advice is to use chocolate that doesn't have to be tempered. I get mine at Baker's Cache and Carry.

To drink, we had infused water and hot cocoa with strawberry heart marshmallows and pink whipped cream. Yum.

I made more Christmas crack, but this time it didn't turn out so great. Last time I used Private Selection brand white chocolate chips, and this time I used Ghirardelli chips. They didn't melt very well, so they didn't coat the puffs as well. I did dye the chocolate pink, which was pretty adorable, and added sprinkles.

So that's it! Happy Valentine's Day!

wanted.

Partner (or two) to go to the Acorn's Antique Show & Sale. I went last year and got an amazing 1930s scarf. This event is probably as close as you'll get to a flea market in Utah. Hundreds of vendors, each specializing in a specific era or type of antique, from jewelry to toys to furniture. It is so much fun.

My usual shopping buddy, my mom, will be in Seattle the weekend of the show, so who wants to go with me? We could make it a date and even get some lunch.

remember me?

{photo credit}
Remember this post, about how Professional Marta would dress? And the pretty sweater above, from Old Navy? Well guess what. I found this sweater. In my size. At Savers. For like, $5.

That was a glorious thrift store find. Sometimes I feel really lucky.

stay tuned...

I just scheduled posts for tomorrow, Saturday, and Monday.

Aren't you excited?

fab ab february

So it's day nine of Fab Ab February, and I have a confession.

I missed two days. Monday I just plum forgot, and Tuesday I didn't get home from the office till 11:00 pm. It had been a very bad day, and I just couldn't face it.

But yesterday, I got back on the bandwagon. I contemplated trying to do it twice a day to get caught up, but ended up just doing the day 8 routine. I went from 6 pushups last Saturday to 8 pushups yesterday, and it was okay!

So, here's to re-commitment. And to being able to do a real pushup by the end of the month!

Have you ever done a month-long fitness program?

Dottie.

I tried out fancy nails today. Turns out I'm not great at making evenly sized dots, and since I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I may not be able to stand these babies for more than a day or two...

christmas crack.

That's what I made for the super bowl party today. I call it that because a coworker brought it in around Christmas, and it is what I imagine crack to be like: delicious and addictive.

Here's the how to.

Ingredients:

1 bag Chester's Puffcorn, butter flavor, 1 bag white chocolate chips, cinnamon to taste.

Directions:

Empty your bag of puffcorn into a large bowl. Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave, in 30-second increments, stirring between each heating. Pour chocolate over puffcorn, and stir till coated. Spread on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil, and sprinkle with cinnamon (optional).

For a festive version, add food coloring in your color of choice to the chocolate, or sprinkle with sprinkles instead of cinnamon.

I mad 4 bags of this for the superbowl, and came home with 1-2 bags worth leftover. I might have to take it to work, because it is dangerous stuff to have around the house.

Also, it may be difficult to find puffcorn. I found mine at Smith's. Be sure to get butter flavor, not cheese.

We also brought bacon-wrapped smokies to the super bowl, a old family favorite. So delicious, in a hotdog sort of way.

Take a Memo.

I find myself making lots of lists. Lists of goals, to do lists, lists of things to look for  thrifting, things I wish to buy new, books to read, guest lists, grocery lists, and on and on and on.

I found myself with a purse full if lists written on scrap paper, so I found a pretty little journal at TJMaxx and consolidated my lists. I'm loving this little book. Lately I've taken to planning out daily outfits, which  maks getting ready in the  morning much faster. Plus, its fun to see what works and what doesn't, and has helped me utilize more of my wardrobe.

Are you a list maker?
