Six Months

Dear Evelyn,

You are six months old! We can't even believe it. At your checkup today, you were 16.6 pounds, putting you in the 60th percentile for weight. You are in the 69th percentile for height, and 90th for head circumference (most of your cousins were off the charts, so this is comparatively good!).

You sit up now, and mostly don't fall over. You love to sit up and play with toys. Today you sat in the nursery chair for almost an hour just playing with toys and books. You still mostly  just want to put things in your mouth, and drool a lot. We think you  might be working on your two top teeth (you only have the bottom two right now).

You are quite responsive to anyone that will give you attention. You love to give smiles, and will laugh and coo when tickled or teased with a toy. Though, sometimes you run out of smiles and are very serious.

People always comment on your big, wide-eyes. A few people have said you always look surprised, but we think you are just opening them wide to take in everything.

Yesterday your cousins were jumping up and down and making you laugh and smile. You also love the Tiki Room song, and pat-a-cake. You grab your toes a lot, and sometimes get them into your mouth.

You love to eat food now, and we think you have a sweet tooth (you love prunes!). Sometimes green beans make you gag, but they are good for you so we try anyway. We give you water in a sippy cup, but you don't get much out. When you do manage to suck down a bit, you get surprised and sometimes spit it out. Drinking from mom's cup is still the best (though you usually contribute more fluid than you get out).

You still have some long, dark newborn hair. The back is very dark, but not as long. The sides and top are probably 3-4 inches long, but very thin. A lot of it has fallen out. Then your new hair, that was just fuzz when you were born, is light brown, almost golden. It is about 3/4 of an inch long now. You still have a bald spot from your crib, right on the back of your head.

You love to see Dad when he comes home, and he loves to see your smiles when he walks through the door. We just wish you liked him a little better at nighttime so Mom could have a break, but we'll work on that.

You can turn yourself around in your crib, but getting your feet on the bars and pushing. Sometimes this puts you in an uncomfortable position, with your head up against the bars. But, we are excited that you are learning to become more mobile. You've also managed to push yourself backward during tummy time a couple of times.

You don't really have favorite toys, you love anything you can grab and eat. You do love the little silver rattle from Grandma Judy, the crinkly bee from Aunt Amy, and the spiky chew ball from Grandma Eileen. Your favorite song is "The Wheels on the Bus," but you love Signing Time songs and the Tiki Room song.

We love you Evie, and can't wait to see what the next six months will bring! Everyday you make us laugh and smile. You fill our lives with joy (and diapers, and tears, and the whole package). It is all worth it.
